I was driving down a quiet road in upstate New York one morning in May, when I noticed a breathtaking flash of red sweep across the dark hemlock trees. It was a Scarlet Tanager, who stopped for a moment in the tallest part of the budding trees, and began to proclaim its raspy song of spring (dawn song recording below provided by Lang Elliott).

Cheers to all,

Stunning image, expertly posed off center. The bird is singing to an audience off stage to the right! I would love to see a sound clip accompanying the photo.
Thanks Bob! I ‘m so glad you like it. Yes, one day….. I’ll get on top of that video thing….(-;
Audio added!
Thanks!
Lang always on the ball. Audio enhanced this great photo.

Thank you Ruthann! I’m excited!
Incredible photo, Melissa! I love how much color has flooded our landscape in the past few weeks.
I will never forget the first time I noticed a scarlet tanager. I was in the North Country, visiting a friends camp, and another friend said, “I think I see a parrot.” So I ran over, consulted my rather new field guide, and positively ID’d my first tanager. They are so brilliant!
Thank you, Jason! They are absolutely brilliant.
Nice Work! I just spotted my first Tanager about two weeks ago upstate in the Catskills. Your image is beautiful
Thank you Natu! And thanks for stopping by.
